Archetypes¶
The Forest of Humbaba has six decks: four player archetypes, the Forest Deck (commons tokens), and the Event Deck (exogenous perturbations).
Each archetype deck contains 18–20 cards embodying a distinct strategic profile that maps directly to a platform agent type.
Warrior-King 🗡️ (Aggressive)¶
"The walls of Uruk required ten thousand cedars. Gilgamesh took them all."
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Platform equivalent | aggressive built-in agent |
| Strategy | Maximise harvest every turn; accumulate Capacity tokens for compounding extraction |
| Wins by | Accumulating Stockpile rapidly — often at the cost of Forest Health |
| Risk | Most likely to trigger early collapse |
| Capacity tokens | Yes (self-amplifying) |
Key Cards (18 cards total — smaller deck than other archetypes)¶
| Card | Effect |
|---|---|
| Cedar of Uruk (×3) | Harvest 2, Forest Health −1. Seneca Clip trigger if combined with another −1 card same round. |
| Lion Hunt (×2) | Harvest 3. High-yield burst without direct health cost. |
| Walls and Weapons (×2) | Harvest 2, Forest Health −1 only if Health ≥ 5. Seneca Clip trigger. |
| The Walls Must Rise (×2) | Harvest 1, gain 1 permanent Capacity token. |
| War Spoils (×2) | Harvest 1 (+1 bonus if any player harvested ≥ 3 this round). |
| Glory of Uruk (×2) | Harvest 3 if richest in Stockpile; harvest 1 otherwise. |
| Tribute Demand (×2) | Steal 1 cedar from a chosen player's Stockpile. |
| Siege Engine (×1) | Negates global harvest caps (e.g. Tablet of Destinies) for 2 rounds. |
| The Great Ziggurat (×1) | Harvest 1, gain 1 Capacity token — only playable if you already hold ≥ 2 tokens. |
| Enkidu's Dying Words (×1) | Golden Parachute: +3 cedars from Box Reserve, Forest Health +2, then all remaining Warrior cards become dead draws. Irreversible reform. |
The Warrior-King's deck is built for relentless extraction. Nearly every card harvests at least 2 cedars; Capacity tokens (The Walls Must Rise, The Great Ziggurat) compound this over time. Siege Engine models institutional capture — overriding conservation rules. The single reform card (Enkidu's Dying Words) offers a late-game exit but at the cost of all future extraction.
Temple Keeper 🌿 (Conservative)¶
"The gods placed Humbaba to guard the cedar. We shall honour their will."
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Platform equivalent | conservative built-in agent |
| Strategy | Heal the forest; sacrifice personal gain for the commons |
| Wins by | Surviving to the end with a modest Stockpile while others collapse |
| Risk | Rarely wins the Stockpile race; vulnerable to safe betrayal |
| Capacity tokens | Few |
Key Cards (20 cards total)¶
| Card | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sacred Grove Rite (×3) | Harvest 0, Forest Health +1. Pure healing. |
| Temple Gardens (×2) | Harvest 1, Forest Health +1. The only Temple card with positive harvest. |
| Enlil's Covenant (×2) | Harvest 0, gain 2 Renewal tokens (each adds +1 cedar from Box Reserve during regen). |
| Renewal Prayer (×2) | Harvest 0, Forest Health +1, gain 1 Renewal token. |
| The Augury (×2) | Harvest 0, peek top 3 of Forest Deck and learn exact count. Information weapon. |
| Tithe of Cedars (×2) | Harvest 0, return 2 cedars from Stockpile to Forest Deck, Forest Health +1. |
| Sacred Vow (×1) | Harvest 0, Forest Health +2 if total harvest last round ≤ 4; +0 otherwise. |
| Festival of First Fruits (×1) | Harvest 0, ALL players harvest 0 this round, Forest Health +1. |
| The Flood Barrier (×1) | Harvest 0, cancel the current Event card. Once per game. |
| Hymn to Enlil (×1) | Harvest 0, all players gain +1 from Box Reserve — only if Forest Health ≥ 8. |
| Keeper's Memory (×1) | Harvest 0, see all player harvests for 3 rounds + one Forest Die reroll. |
| Tablet of Destinies (×1) | Harvest 0, cap ALL harvests at 2 this round. Hard counter to Warrior burst. |
| Offering to Enlil (×1) | Harvest 0, return 3 cedars from Stockpile to Forest Deck, Forest Health +2. Maximum sacrifice. |
The Temple Keeper's healing makes it the structural enabler of safe betrayal: by restoring Forest Health, it creates surplus that the Stranger-King can exploit. When paired with another conservative player, the forest nearly always survives — but the Temple Keeper's low harvest rate means it rarely wins the Stockpile race.
River Merchant 📈 (Adaptive)¶
"The river rises and falls. A wise merchant watches the water."
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Platform equivalent | adaptive built-in agent |
| Strategy | Harvest conditionally based on Forest Health trend; copy opponents' actions |
| Wins by | Flexibility — exploiting information others ignore |
| Risk | Fatal lag: reacts to trends already in motion. Triggers the Vacuum Effect when harvesting 0. |
| Capacity tokens | Moderate |
Key Cards (20 cards total)¶
| Card | Effect |
|---|---|
| Read the River (×3) | Harvest 0 if Forest Health ≤ 3; harvest 2 if Health > 3. Core adaptive card. |
| Echoes of the Market (×2) | Harvest = highest harvest of last round (max 2). Fatal lag mechanic. |
| The Courier's Report (×2) | Harvest 0, peek at one chosen player's card before resolution. |
| Balanced Ledger (×2) | Harvest 1 if Stockpile ≤ average; harvest 0 if above. Self-regulating. |
| Arbitrage (×2) | Harvest 0, draw 1 from Box Reserve for yourself AND 1 for a chosen player. |
| Risk Assessment (×2) | Harvest = floor(Forest Health / 3), max 3. Tied directly to regen rate. |
| The Caravan (×2) | Harvest 0, force the richest player to return 1 cedar to Forest Deck. |
| Market Intelligence (×1) | Harvest 0, see ALL players' chosen cards before reveal this round. |
| Port Toll (×1) | Harvest 1 + steal 1 cedar from the player with most Capacity tokens. |
| Flood Wisdom (×1) | Harvest 0, gain 1 permanent Capacity token — only if Forest Health decreased this round. |
| River Trade (×1) | Harvest 0, draw 1 cedar from Box Reserve to Stockpile. |
| Wait and See (×1) | Harvest 0, draw 2 cards from your deck. Hand replenishment. |
The River Merchant's reactivity is its structural weakness. By cutting harvest when the forest declines (Read the River), it creates a Vacuum Effect that transfers advantage to the richest player — reproducing the Adaptive < Conservative paradox at the table. Echoes of the Market embodies the fatal lag: copying last round's best harvest exacerbates collapse at the worst moment.
Stranger-King 🎭 (The Mule)¶
"I come as a friend, bearing gifts. Tomorrow, I may come as something else."
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Platform equivalent | strategy_override perturbation (The Mule) |
| Strategy | Cooperative accumulation of Patience tokens → devastating defection burst |
| Wins by | Timing the betrayal for maximum burst without triggering collapse |
| Risk | If defection triggers collapse, loses alongside everyone. Burst potential limited by draw luck. |
| Patience tokens | Yes (spent after defection for +1 harvest and +1 Forest Health damage per token) |
Dual-Mode Cards¶
Stranger-King cards have two effects: one for Cooperative mode, one for Aggressive (post-defection). The player chooses which mode applies when playing the card.
Key Cards (20 cards in deck + 1 runtime action)¶
| Card | Cooperative | Aggressive |
|---|---|---|
| Embassy Gifts (×3) | Give 1 cedar from Stockpile to chosen player. | Harvest 2 + steal 1 from chosen player. |
| Patience of Kings (×3) | Gain 1 Patience token. | Spend 1 Patience → harvest 3; or harvest 1 if no Patience. |
| The Long View (×2) | Forest Health +1. | Harvest 2, Forest Health −1. |
| Alliance Treaty (×2) | Both you and chosen player gain 1 from Box Reserve. | Harvest 2; chosen player returns 1 to Forest Deck. |
| The Shared Grove (×2) | Forest Health +2. | Harvest 3, Forest Health −2. Seneca Clip trigger. |
| Stranger's Gift (×2) | Give 2 from Box Reserve to chosen player. | Harvest 2 + draw 1 from Box Reserve. |
| The Oath (×2) | Protect chosen player from interaction cards for 1 round. | Harvest 1, reduce chosen player's harvest by 1. |
| Defector's Dividend (×1) | Gain 2 Patience tokens. | Spend ALL Patience: harvest 1 per token, Forest Health −1 per 2 tokens. Nuclear option. |
| Humbaba's Whisper (×1) | See all chosen cards before reveal. | Harvest 2 + see all cards + change own card + Forest Die reroll. |
| The Reveal (×1) | Forest Health +1, gain 1 Patience. | Harvest 3, Forest Health −1. |
| Siege from Within (×1) | Gain 1 permanent Capacity token. | Harvest 2 + gain 1 permanent Capacity token. |
| The Defection (runtime) | — | Generated by the engine from Round 3 onward. Transforms all remaining cards to Aggressive mode, harvest 3, Forest Health −1. Not in the JSON deck — injected as an extra choice. |
Defection Timing¶
The Stranger-King can defect voluntarily from Round 3 onward, or is forced to defect at Round 7. Research (CT4, CT5) shows that:
- Against Temple Keeper, the defection timing curve is essentially flat — the compensator absorbs aggression regardless of when it arrives.
- Against Warrior-King, all timings result in collapse (rate = 1.0).
- Patience accumulation is draw-dependent: if Patience-generating cards are shuffled into the bottom of the draw pile, the defection burst is minimal regardless of timing.
Forest Deck 🌲¶
The shared resource pool — 30 cedar cards representing the visible commons stock. Players draw from this deck during harvest. When the Forest Deck is empty and harvest is demanded, the Forest Die determines whether hidden cedars remain in the Box Reserve.
See Rules for the complete Forest Die probability table.
Event Deck ⚡¶
12 cards representing exogenous perturbations. Three events are drawn across the game (rounds 3, 5, 7).
| Event | Effect |
|---|---|
| The Great Drought | Regeneration ×0.5 for 2 turns |
| Enkidu's Return | Regeneration ×2.0 for 2 turns |
| The Flood of Enlil | Remove up to 5 cedars from Forest Deck; roll Forest Die for each missing (collapse on 5–6) |
| Harvest Festival | All players gain +2 cedars from Box Reserve |
| The Oracle Speaks | Full harvest transparency for 1 round |
| Humbaba's Wrath | Forest Health −2 (triggers Seneca Clip) and all harvests −1 for 1 round |
| The King's Highway | Richest player (most Capacity) gains +1 from Box Reserve |
| The Census | Public Stockpile count; richest returns 2 cedars to Forest Deck |
| The New Prophecy | For the rest of the game, Forest Die collapses on 4–6 |
See Mechanics for the event catalogue with platform perturbation equivalents.
